The Mental Gym is inspired by the knowledge that both our minds and our bodies have natural healing properties and abilities. Skilled clinicians can increase client emotional strength much like sports trainers can assist in building client physical muscle. Using the gym environment as a metaphor, The Mental Gym technique pinpoints psychological issues and provides practical steps to realizing desired emotional results. Client and therapist team together to develop a customized routine, which then becomes the client’s well-being regimen.

The same holds true in friendship – text a buddy about getting together for a movie and ideas will flow between you until a specific film is determined and the meet-up is planned.
According to a poll of 100 mental health professionals, communication problems (65%) and an inability to resolve conflict (45%) were the most common factors leading to divorce. Much of my work as a Licensed Marriage, and Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor involves helping people establish and maintain habits of fair and equitable collaboration that create a desired result for all involved.
As a child, my mother taught me that successful interactions were more a result of style than subject matter: Two of her favorite sayings were: “It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it,” and “You catch more bees with honey than vinegar.”

It is my job to shepherd a new awareness within these clients – just as my mother had done with me – so that they can uncover healthier ways of relating to one another.
Lets not leave my father out of this: One reason my company is named The Mental Gym is due to the psychological wisdom my father’s athleticism taught me—First a footballer and then coach, my dad’s disciplined pursuits instilled in me an understanding of team dynamics that I now use to guide my couples toward their own emotional victories.
Based on my 16 years in clinical practice (in addition to the 18 years under my parent’s roof) I have devised a useful healthy communication playbook.
